  18. The original 16550 from National Semiconductor was buggy and not effective... 
  19. however, that part has been out of production for years (my 16550A spec book 
  20. is dated 1987), so I would think that the omission of the "A" is perhaps a 
  21. mistake or, more likely, an indication that the part is a 16550A-equivalent 
  22. from another manufacturer.  I wouldn't worry.
